The Basics of Trauma and PTSD

Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are broad terms for mental health disorders that affect many people in the world today.

Trauma refers to experiencing one or more upsetting events that are life-threatening and/or emotionally distressing and that you may struggle to cope with. Overcoming traumatic events requires a great deal of resilience, which would be the ability to recover and adapt from difficult situations mentally.

PTSD, which is a subcategory of trauma, was first identified in the armed forces, although it can affect anyone, and left untreated can have a detrimental effect on both the individual and their loved ones. PTSD is often triggered by extreme events over which you have very little control and is characterized by intense feelings and disturbing thoughts long after the traumatic event has ended.

Trauma and PTSD can especially impact minority groups, which is why at GY Counseling online in Maryland, our diverse team is educated in multicultural issues.

What is CBT?

CBT stands for cognitive behavioral therapy, which is a form of talk therapy. It’s suitable for many issues we experience today, including problematic behaviors and mental and emotional health disorders. CBT works to change destructive or harmful thinking patterns or behaviors and redirect clients so they can improve their overall quality of life.

What is DBT?

DBT stands for dialectical behavioral therapy, and it’s a form of modified CBT. This type of therapy is geared towards clients who feel intense and overwhelming emotions, and while it also helps modify unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns, it also focuses on finding peace with yourself and who you are. DBT helps you learn to regulate emotions, cope with stress in a healthy way, and for clients suffering from PTSD and self-destructive behaviors.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and it’s a type of psychotherapy that uses guided sessions to stimulate bilateral brain activity.  EMDR is used to help manage unresolved memories that are affecting your day-to-day life by relying on the brain’s natural capacity to heal.
